Description:

• The Communications Infrastructure Technician will be a member of the team responsible for the deployment and maintenance of the University's voice and data telecommunications cable infrastructure that supports the wired and wireless networks, the University CATV plant, and cellular & public safety distributed antenna systems. They will perform day-to-day operational work & projects performing technical tasks and troubleshooting issues.

• Installs, troubleshoots, & maintains the infrastructure for the supported services consisting of VOIP Telephony, audio code connections to legacy telephony devices, emergency phone support, CATV plant, fire alarm communications network, cellular distributed antenna system (DAS), public safety distributed antenna systems (E-DAS), underground telecommunication cable location identification and marking, and infrastructure disconnects.

• Performs high level troubleshooting & installation of fiber optic terminations & fusion splicing, including testing verifications for Loss Length (Tier-1) & OTDR traces (Tier2), installs & diagnoses complex problems on fiber optic pathways, and coordinates & installs low voltage cables, activations, & repairs.

• Performs certifying test results for copper & fiber optic infrastructure.

• Maintains the Arc GIS Database infrastructure records for GPS locations of newly installed & legacy communication cable plants.

• Oversees assigned trouble tickets & work orders while maintaining SLE deadlines.

• Performs telecommunication Room (TR) upkeep & maintenance.

• Supports IT project work.

• Provide 24x7x365 response for incidents and alerts Develop, maintain, and provide infrastructure documentation, including internal departmental database records, infrastructure audits, LCM efforts, & preventive maintenance.

• Installs low-voltage wiring, adhering to the technical specifications of the University's low-voltage structured wiring standards.

• Keeps up to date with the latest IT technologies through training on topics from the primary duties and responsibilities; focusing on low voltage cabling infrastructure & connectivity, fiber optic termination & splicing procedures, and certifying testing practices.

• Attends, schedules, and/or facilitates meetings related to job duties Fills in for teammates, and responds to emergencies when needed Performs other duties as assigned

• Must have working knowledge of structured cabling systems, applying a technical understanding of industry standards & network infrastructure Knowledge of and experience with modern service management systems to receive trouble tickets Ability to troubleshoot complex issues and meet SLE requirements Strong client-facing and internal documentation skills Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills required Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, executives, managers, and subject matter experts Technical expertise to assist in decision making and analysis Ability to apply experience and judgment to plan and accomplish basic goals, great problem-solving skills Customer Service: Must possess an aptitude for patience, professionalism, tactfulness, and empathy; must have the ability to assess the specific needs of the customer and be able to communicate these appropriately; must possess the ability to clearly communicate with clients and team members through written and spoken words.

• Project Management: Meet goals and deadlines towards completion and manage timelines Planning and Organization: Ability to lead, plan, and organize the work of others Technical Knowledge: Understands basic network protocols, understands network layer 1 infrastructure, requires detailed understanding of network low voltage structured wiring and its associated physical infrastructure Software Knowledge: Ability to utilize Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, Teams, & similar software applications for daily tasks.

• Technical Solution Development: Understands the root cause of the problem; ability to make suggestions for technical modifications to prevent future problems; ability to make decisions on appropriate course of action for unique problems Technical Support: Ability to independently resolve complex problems within areas of responsibilities; ability to perform diagnostics in a timely manor Consultancy Skills: Ability to assess needs of user and recommend solutions to meet customer needs; ability to consult with senior-level decision makers, on an on-going basis, to discuss alternative technical solutions



Keywords:

Education:

• Completion of an infrastructure low voltage certificate program or degree from an accredited technical school preferred associate degree in computers or information technology required plus 4 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Experience can be instead than education.
